Lib Dems Slam Council Short-sightedness12.00.00am GMT Fri 1st Mar 2002 Plans to fund further improvements to Bedford borough frontline services were thrown out during a full council meeting of Bedford Borough Council. The plans which were introduced by the Liberal Democrat group sought to create concessionary bus fares for all adults aged over 60, as well as improving borough play areas and local shopping facilities. Following extensive analysis of the councils spending plans the Liberal Democrats planned to release funds earmarked for councils furniture and ceremonial functions. Cllr Michael Headley, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, who proposed the idea, said: "The complete lack of support we received for these plans from the rest of the council shows just how topsy-turvy their priorities are. They would rather hang onto their own privileges than seek to make improvements for the good of the people of Bedford borough. Once again the Liberal Democrats have stood up for local people but through others short-sightedness our plans have been dashed." He added: "We looked at all the councils spending plans as we believe it is pointless having this money languishing in the bank. Already we are seeing funding directed away from services towards increased beauraucracy in the form of a mayoral election. We respect the wishes of those who chose to vote for the election of a Mayor but we also want to see funding pushed over into frontline services, which is where people will really benefit. We are seeking to introduce bus passes for all adults aged over 60 as well as introducing frontline projects such as improving neighbourhood shopping areas, and children's play areas."
