Lib Dem Mayor Candidate Announced

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 28th Jun 2002

Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats have chosen Christine McHugh to fight the Mayoral Election in October.

Christine McHugh is a senior Lib Dem councillor with a high pedigree. She has extensive business experience and has a high quality education from Cambridge University and Harvard University USA, up to a PhD.

Lib Dem Cllr Michael Headley said "I am really pleased to be backing Christine McHugh for the important job of Mayor. She has all the qualities necessary as a strong leader with a sound understanding of the commercial world and an education gained through life as well as academic study. She will give the Council the direction, drive and dedication it has been lacking."

Christine McHugh said:

"I am putting myself forward because I know the Council can be better run and deliver more for our Borough. I have watched it from the outside as well as seeing it from the inside and share the frustrations of local people. The Borough has such a lot to offer and with the right leadership so much more can be done. I am convinced that I can win this election, and lead the Council into the 21st Century."
