Lib Dems Slam Weekend £70K Office Move12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 8th Jul 2003
Liberal Democrat Councillors mounted a protest outside the Town Hall at the weekend as the Mayor's £70,000 office move was taking place. Liberal Democrats have opposed the costly new offices for the Mayor his adviser and senior managers throughout. Lib Dem Group Leader Michael Headley said "This is not a priority for the Council. The Better Bedford Party made many promises to the electorate but refurbishing Mayoral Offices wasn't one of them. The Taxpayer is facing the prospect of a 20% rise in Council Tax from the Borough Council next year if action isn't taken quickly. In that climate it is very insensitive to splash out this money on doing up offices. This money is a huge amount for just turning one set of offices into another set of offices." "We have presented a list of priority actions that need to be taken to get the Council back on track. The Council is due to be inspected later this year and if the Better Bedford party and its allies don't start to make a difference then they will get the poor result they deserve. "
