Putnoe Lib Dems are Calling For Go-Ped Riders to Stick to the Law and Consider the Safety of themselves and Others

Lib Dems have taken action against unsafe and often illegal use of Go-Peds and other miniature motorcycles.

Following a number of noise complaints and the dangerous use of the bikes along the pavements in Putnoe, Lib Dem councillors have joined forces with the local police and street ranger to try to combat the problem. As part of the campaign Lib Dems have leafleted over 400 homes urging people to report any misuse of the bikes. Under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 Police have the powers to issue warnings over misuse and if they reoffend seize the bikes. The leaflets explain that it is illegal for the bikes to be used on pavements altogether or on a public roads unless they are taxed and insured, and their riders are aged 16yrs or over and wearing crash helmets. The leaflets also urge residents to contact the police without needing to give any information other than a description of the rider and the area where they were seen.

Although marketed as "toys" Go-Peds can reach speeds of 60 mph and there have been fatalities and serious injuries in other parts of the country as a result of accidents.

Since the campaign was started residents have reported a marked reduction in Go-Ped use with the police issuing over 16 warnings and seizing 2 bikes.

Speaking on the issue, Putnoe Lib Dem, Cllr Myrtle Stewardson, said:

" Too often it is being reported that these bikes are being ridden with no concern for other people. Many people don't realise that they are subject to the same regulations as other vehicles and should be fully taxed and insured to use our roads. It's illegal for them to be ridden on the pavement and I fear this is where we could see a serious accident occur through improper use. There have been fatalities from these machines elsewhere and many more have suffered cuts and bruises. It's not always the rider that comes off worse either.

Legislation is in place which means Go-peds riders can receive warnings and if they reoffend the bikes can then be seized. We are working with the Police so that everyone knows the consequences of failing comply with the legislation. It can prove very costly if riders breach the regulations.

Since we started the campaign the Police have issued 16 warnings, 2 bikes have been seized and there has been a marked reduction in instances of the bikes being used. I hope people have heard the warnings and will now see these bikes used legally and that Putnoe will become a much quieter and safer area again."
