Bedford could benefit from Clegg's green revolution as Vann slams Labour's ineffective VAT cut

Liberal Democrats emphasise the importance of environmental issues.

The Liberal Democrats are the only party offering a green road out of the recession

Henry Vann has announced that Nick Clegg and Vince Cable's plans to create jobs in a green economy could benefit Bedford and Kempston directly by creating new jobs and transport links.

The proposals are costed by scrapping the tiny VAT reduction introduced by Labour and instead spending the £12.5 billion on a green road out of the recession.

The plans include developing the rail network plans which specifically mention Bedford as an option for improving an east-west rail link.

There would also be funding for zero-carbon social housing, funding for insulation for one million homes nationwide, with a £1,000 subsidy for one million more, and a five year programme to insulate every school and hospital, including those in Bedford and Kempston.

Henry Vann said: "The Liberal Democrats are the only party which would help Bedford and Kempston in this economic downturn.

"High street sales of up to 75 per cent or more make a mockery of a 2.5 per cent reduction in VAT.

"Not only is the cut insignificant, it also costs small businesses money to implement changes, and doesn't apply to basic goods, so it only really benefits the most wealthy.

"We would reduce the administrative costs to small businesses, whilst creating new jobs, and new spending, by investing in rail links and green industry for Bedford and Kempston."
